New Cigars 7/17/10

Magnums have finally received it’s shipment of the “Black Top Gurkhas”. These are some of the most popular cigars we have ever carried. Humidified in Louis XIII Cognac, then sealed in a glass tube, and hand dipped in wax to seal in the 100yr old Cognac. Still Only $15.00.

We also now have the Cain Nubs in Maduro and Habano. Having the Cain blended to be a nub means all the flavor the regular Cains have to offer, are now up front through out the whole cigar.

Saturday’s Beer and Wine Tasting

This Saturday, July 17th, starting at 7:30 and ending around 9:00, we will taste through some fantastic beers and some amazing wines. We will have Diamondback Distributing here introducing a couple beers from Wasatch brewing, Squatters brewing, as well as Costa De Oro wines.

Established in 1986 Wasatch Brewery is the first brewery in Park City, Utah, since prohibition, they has established its self as a primer brewery on a national level. We are tasting :

Polygamy Porter – This dark, medium bodied ale offers the drink-ability of a much lighter beer. The inviting chocolate and malty flavors fade into a slightly dry, silky smooth finish. Why have just one? 4.0% alcohol by volume. • 2008 Silver Medal Winner, Brown Porter, North American Brewers’ Association • 2008 Silver Medal Winner, Brown Porter, World Beer Cup • 2006 Silver Medal Winner, Brown Porter, North American Brewers’ Association

Devastator Dopple Bock – This is a strong, amber lager (8% abv). It has a fluffy white head with a bready malt aroma and a rich body that leaves you with a warming feeling. This Double Bock style dates back over a century when Monastic brewers knew it as “liquid bread.” Beware . . . it’s deceivingly smooth and delicious.

As Squatters grew we embraced the Triple Bottom Line philosophy of People Planet Profit. We source healthy ingredients and use environmentally friendly products and services from within our local eco-region. We will taste:

Hop Rising – Big hop, big malt, big beer. One of the most aggressive beers ever released in Utah, Hop Rising a double India Pale Ale, clocks in at 85 IBU’s and 9% alcohol. We use three different malts to create enough flavor to perfectly balance three varieties of hops, then, because we can’t help ourselves, we dry-hop it; resulting in an amazing two pounds of hops per barrel! The combination of robust malty flavors and huge hop bitterness provide a well-balanced beer; a hop lover’s dream

Our mission is to produce the finest wines from the Central Coast using the artistry of Old-World winemaking styles and New-World grape growing practices. Our Gold Coast Vineyard, located in the Santa Maria Valley of Santa Barbara County, is the home for our Estate Pinot Noirs and Chardonnays. We have carefully selected several Central Coast vineyards to source additional grapes for our label. Winemaker Gary Burk produces wines of balance, harmony and complexity for you to drink and enjoy!

July 21st Red Carpet Cigar Event

This Wednesday, July 21 we are having a Diamond Crown Red Carpet Event. We will have Micheal from Diamond Crown here with cigars, give aways, and and a winning personality. We will kick this off at 7:30pm, with a Mocambo Rum tasting. We will have special pricing on the Diamond Crown Natural, and Maximus. The cigar event will end around 9:00pm.

Created to celebrate J.C. Newman’s 100th anniversary, Diamond Crown cigars are a collaboration of Carlos Fuente and Stanford J. Newman. Making a cigar this complex requires a large variety of tobaccos, the blenders found a beautiful balance with 6 to 7 different tobaccos. Holding it all together is a true Connecticut Fermented Wrapper (CFW) , selected by Carlos Fuente himself. Thus making this cigar one of the finest made today, and personally one of my favorites.

Ten years later Mr. Newman Challenged Carlos Fuente to top his previous masterpiece. So this time Carlos teamed up with Oliva Cigars to sculpt his new masterpiece, the Diamond Crown Maximus. Filler and binder are sourced from specially aged Dominican tobaccos, and wrapped with Oliva’s rare El Bajo wrapper. The El Bajo Farm is placed right along the Rio Macul River, making this one of the most nutrient rich regions of Ecuador. The perfect soil and climate for a rich complex wrapper.

The rum portion of the event has been canceled.

This is an event I’ve been looking forward to for quite some time now. I hope to see you there.

Hemingway Maduro, what is there to say other than you can’t go wrong with any Hemingway….. Very nice draw, didn’t  have to get Russ’s reamer.  Would go very nice with a pour of Last Drop, but alas, maybe another time.  Mellow enough to go with anything.  I’m like’n the flavor, but missing an Anejo …maybe next….

The Aurora 107 was released in 2010 to represent the 107th anniversary of the company.  The label is bright and colorful with a faded red to yellow with the lion’s head and 3 separate gold coins covering the sides.

Draw: Good
Burn: Very well
Construction: Good/Excellent (nice veins in the wrapper)

The first 1/3 of this cigar was very woody with some spice.

The second 1/3 contained a little more spice with a hint of leather and a nice nutty flavor.

The last 1/3 had some hints of coffee with some spice and a hint of charred wood.

Overall,  A well-made cigar with great taste and good design.

Here is me (David Stevens) with Cigar Icon Benji Menendez taken at a General Cigar Company Inc. event on Wednesday May 19th 2010 promoting the Partagas Benji Master Series cigar. I passed on a couple of my cherrished Ramon – Ramon cigars (from the once and only 2001 release to honor Ramon Cifuentes after his passing in  January 2000) to Benji for which he was very thankful.

Cigar Review:

The Partagas Black Label is a rich maduro cigar featuring a medio tiempo sun grown wrapper lending to a very full flavored and full bodied experience. Wrapped sun-grown Havana-seed leaf from the Connecticut River Valley, this is a very robust blend of Nicaraguan and Piloto Cubano ligeros. Flavors of earth, semi-sweet dark chocolate, and dark roasted espresso delight my senses but was not too spicy. This is a dark, oily cigar with little color variation in the wrapper.  It has a deep tobacco smell and sweet pre-draw. The construction is very good and provided an easy draw with plenty of smoke and a leisurely, even burn. Age seems to be the magic ingredient to these cigars – mine came in a Cedar Cask and were aged when I received them – I stored them another 3 months in my Humidor to settle them in before trying one – it was worth the wait. This made it into my top 10 favorite smokes – pairs well with a peaty single malt.

Cigars and Tequila at Magnums this Wednesday

This Wednesday, July 7th, starting a little later than usual at 7:30pm and will be ending around 9:00pm, we will have Oliva cigars here. We also taste through the Casa Noble family of tequilas. And as a special surprise we will also taste the Reserva del Maestro Dobel Diamond tequila.

With Jeff from Oliva here we will have our buy 3 get 1 free as well as our buy 5 get 2 on any Oliva products, including the Nub and Cain cigars. We also will have a buy any 20 of the Oliva family of cigars and you will receive 8 free cigars and a limited Oliva golf shirt.

Jim Schably will be here to taste you on the tequilas. We will have special pricing for the night of the event.

Casa Noble ultra premium tequila begins as carefully selected mature Blue Agave plants, which have met our strict requirements for water and sugar content. We employ only traditional methods and slow-cook our rich agave pinas for 38 hours in stone ovens. Then, using only the core and hearts of the agaves, we extract their sweet nectar. Our fermentation process is 100% natural, followed by a triple distillation. The result is a tequila so pure and full of agave flavor that it has elevated the concept of tequila to new levels around the world.

Reserva del Maestro Dobel Diamond Reposado Tequila, a 100% Agave blend of Reposado, Anejo, and Extra Anejo Tequilas which have been gently filtered giving the Tequila an incredible Diamond Clarity and crispness.

Juan Dobel, working with Maestros Marco Anguiano and Luis Yerenas, wanted to create his own brand and offer Tequila Aficionados something truly unique. Each Agave used is grown for 8 to 10 years, and hand selected at one of a small number of their family’s best quality producing ranches. This hand-crafted product is produced in small batches and aged in new oak casks from Southern Europe.

More New Pipe Tobaccos

We just received our latest shipment of new pipe tobaccos. This time we brought in some of the McClelland family of blends. These guys do some amazing things with their tobaccos.

Personally I like a lot of Syrian Latakia in my smoke, so you may notice a little of a biasness in some of the tobaccos I bring in. But I do love a good Virginia or Cavendish as well. So I look forward to hearing some feedback on the blends we already carry, or blends you would like to see us bring in. Also wanted to note that one of my favorite recourses on pipe tobacco is http://www.tobaccoreviews.com/, great user generated reviews, giving you the chance to see all of what’s out there. Let us know if you know of any other great resources for pipe tobaccos.
